On The Line: Eleanor Guerrrero-Campbell (audio interview), June 21, 2016
Joseph Planta:: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
The book is called Stumbling Through Paradise: A Feast of Mercy for Manuel del Mundo. It’s the first novel from the writer, activist, and former urban planner Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell, who joins me now. In the book, set in Canada, the del Mundo family emigrates from the Philippines to find a better life. Their arrival from Canada is far from idyllic. They seek paradise but find challenges along the way. What this book does is shed some light onto the travails that immigrants face, the burden on parents and the children, and the loneliness and isolation that often comes with trying to make a go of life in a new place...

"Story of Filipino Family Hits Home for Immigrants", June 8, 2016
A new novel reflects on the experiences of Filipino Canadians through the story of one family, and aims to inspire newcomers to achieve their dreams.
Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell’s novel, Stumbling Through Paradise: A Feast of Mercy for Manuel del Mundo, is a work of fiction inspired by the author's experiences working with immigrants. “Home – one's identity – is not geographic-based, it's not culture-based, it's not age-based. It's who you love and who loves you and who you care about and who cares about you,” says Guerrero-Campbell, who co-founded the non-profit organization Multicultural Helping House Society to assist newcomers with settlement, education, housing and employment in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell’s book, Stumbling Through Paradise, is an intergenerational novel about the Filipino Canadian experience. It is a story about an immigrant’s determination and hope.
“I hope that anyone reading this book might step into the shoes of a newcomer – an immigrant, a refugee – and empathize with their struggles, feel compassion for them, and care about them, rather than discriminating against them or resenting them. I hope reading the book will help them understand Filipinos better, too.” Vancouver-based author Guerrero-Campbell conveyed to Pilipino Express via phone interview.

"Set for launch, Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell's debut novel tackles immigration", May 13, 2016
On May 21, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Creekside Community Recreation Centre in Olympic Village will host the book launch of Stumbling Through Paradise: A Feast of Mercy for Manuel del Mundo by Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell. An involving take on the settling-immigrant narrative, the novel follows the fictional Filipino family the del Mundos as they journey to Canada.
Guerrero-Campbell worked with newcomers as a founding director of the immigrant-services organization Multicultural Helping House Society, and personally observed the employment issues surrounding immigration. She met many highly educated individuals from the Philippines, India, and China who were shocked by the loss of status, income, confidence, and respect, and all despairing about the difficulty of finding jobs in their field—especially after being formally admitted into Canada because of that education. She also saw the other side, the worries of regulatory bodies and employers involved in hiring newly immigrated individuals.
The novel’s narrative is interwoven with problems, issues, and solutions surrounding chronic underemployment through three generations of del Mundos. Set in Metro Vancouver from the '80s to the present, the story is rife with racial tensions....

You’ve heard it all before: immigrant engineers end up driving taxis, teachers cleaning floors, doctors working as clerks, that you hardly care anymore. But if you knew exactly how it feels to be that engineer – your wife also unable to practice her profession, your children being bullied in school and unhappy at home, a decline in your income and status, loss of confidence and moral authority over your family – perhaps then you might begin to care.

Philippine Canadian News.com: What inspired you to proceed with the book, given that you were privy to many of their stories in your work with institutions catering to their needs.
Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell: The underemployment of skilled immigrants is now a widely known fact in Canada. Many initiatives from government, the non profit sector, some regulatory bodies, and even employers have tried to improve the situation through mentoring programs and such. Yet, skilled immigrants continue to be underemployed. There are just too many of them. Not enough employers are hiring them. There are not enough programs due to limited resources...
